To crack a china cup, it is necessary to determine the real-time response of the cracked cup to the pulse explosion, which is a threshold-based method. The forward modelling can be used to predict the mechanical behavior of the cracked cup at the design conditions (in this case, 20 MPa and 1200 psi). The idea is to use the well-assured closed-form model (CSMA, NDT, McG and SPM) to predict the final crack using the real-time response of the cracked cup. For example, the real-time load-displacement response of a cracked cup during the pulse explosion can be predicted using the CSMA, NDT, McG and SPM models. The current study is to use the SPM model to predict the dynamic crack propagation in a dropped cup based on the real-time response of the cracked cup during the pulse explosion. In this case, the elastic cracking of the cracked cup would be simulated using the SPM model which is a nonlinear finite element model for predicting the evolution of a crack in the cracked material. The material properties of the cup model are: density * 3200 kg m, Young’s modulus * 150 GPa, Poisson’s ratio * 0.33. The initial crack lengths of the cup model are 1, 2, 4, 6, and 10 mm (i.e., from the inner surface to the inner surface for the cracked sections). The load pulse is a Pz signal, which is modelled to provide a flat region in the beginning of the pulse and the Pz signal is dropped to zero in the middle of the pulse. The average load in the flat region is 0.2 kN. The rise time of the pulse is 2 ms. The pulse energy for this study is 10 kJ, which is divided into 100 points in the pulse input and the maximum value of the load signal is 20 kN, which is equal to 7,600 times the energy of the pulse. The response of the cracked cup to the pulse signal can be predicted using the SPM model.
