Ansab al-ashraf, edited by O. Kaiser, second ed., Cairo, Egypt, 1381/1961.
A Muslim scholar al-Baladhuri (d. 583/1188), (Arabic: بلعججلي بن مرفوعه بغفيص في الكثير من جائز العرب) was born in Dharbiyya, northern Iraq, contemporary with the Islamic prophet Muhammad. He died at Baghdad in 1188. Having learnt both Arabic and Persian, he is said to have lived during the reign of Harun al-Rashid. Al-Baladhuri spent much of his life as a judge in Iraq, but also travelled extensively throughout the Muslim world. He is best known as the author of an eleven volume, “an account of the journeys, wars and other matters concerning the  .
Baladhuri is known as the author of the historical work “Ansab al-Ashraf” (referred to here and henceforth as “the book of travelers and compilers” to distinguish it from another book of the same title by another author). He dates his work to the first half of the 8th century and it is assumed that he wrote it on order from Caliph Harun al-Rashid (e.g. 770-795/ 12th -14th centuries). It consists of a compendium of travelogues spanning the latter half of the 7th to the late 10th centuries.
The book is written in elegant prose and ornate diction, and shows great connoisseurship, if not admiration, for most of the sights, products, and customs depicted. However, its authorship is questionable, as it contradicts other contemporary writers who are said to have made similar writings in the pre-Islamic period.
Al-Baladhuri is also the author of a 2-volume book of biographies of Islamic saints.
